The Low Vision Works® Rehabilitation Program

The Low Vision Works® program is a highly effective vision occupational therapy process that restores vision and functionality to individuals with low vision disabilities- such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and certain types of stroke-related vision disorders.

The Low Vision Works program is a uniquely structured approach that consistently improves functional visual acuity, as well as reading speed and accuracy.

THE LVW DIFFERENCE

Meaningful Results Through Occupational Therapy-Based Low Vision Rehabilitation

Since the introduction of the Low Vision Works program in 2001, individuals participating in our occupational therapy-led interventions have demonstrated consistently strong outcomes in functional vision and daily task performance.

Many of our clients experience:

  • Significant improvements in functional visual acuity

  • Noticeable increases in reading speed and accuracy

  • Enhanced ability to read smaller print sizes with appropriate tools and training

These outcomes are made possible through structured, evidence-informed protocols that focus on maximizing remaining vision, integrating sensory and cognitive strategies, and personalizing the use of assistive devices.

As a result, our clients often regain confidence in performing meaningful daily activities such as:

  • Reading books, mail, and menus

  • Watching television

  • Preparing meals

  • Using a computer or smartphone

  • Managing grooming and dressing

  • Shopping independently

  • Recognizing the faces of loved ones

These improvements reflect the powerful impact that medical low vision occupational therapy rehabilitation, provided by licensed occupational therapists in coordination with referring eye care professionals, can have on safety, independence, and quality of life.

Personalized Therapy in the Comfort of Your Home or in the Community

Our licensed occupational therapists deliver individualized low vision occupational therapy rehabilitation services directly in your home or community setting using our structured visual program. Each plan of care is tailored to support your specific goals and functional needs.

Through this program, we will help you:

  • Maximize the use of your remaining vision

  • Improve or maintain reading abilities through structured training

  • Collaborate with you to modify daily routines and environments in ways that promote safety, independence, and efficient use of vision

  • Support the process of identifying appropriate assistive devices in coordination with your low vision care team

  • Provide training in the functional use of adaptive tools and technology as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan

  • Connect with community-based resources and support groups

Therapy sessions are approximately one hour in length, scheduled one to two times per week over the course of about eight weeks, depending on individual progress and needs.

Low vision is a growing problem, striking seniors more than any other age group.

As the U.S. population ages, we see more and more people effected by macular degeneration – it strikes someone new every three minutes in the U.S.
